Creative Women in Marin

We just received our first order of Creative Women in our Larkspur location, and we're loving it. While we technically received table cloths and napkins, in the past week our creative customers have brought them home to be used as a bedspread, a throw for a couch, a shawl, and of course, a tablecloth - another reminder to do what inspires you and to think big. This is exactly what Ellen Dorsch did when she founded Creative Women. She started because she loves beautiful things, wanted to make a real difference in women's lives, and is fascinated by travel. From that inspired set of goals, over the past eight years, Creative Women has helped its partner studios grow and provide jobs for more than 300 women. The Vermont-based company works in partnership with with six women-owned textile design studios in Ethiopia, Swaziland, Afghanistan, and Mali to create traditionally-inspired contemporary accessories and home textiles. Creative Women buys directly from women-owned businesses, is expanding markets for hand-woven textiles, and pays fair prices for their goods. Each purchase supports fair trade practices and women’s financial independence in developing nations. We fell in love with the look and feel of these beautiful tapestries when we opened the box. We fell in love with them more after reading their story. Isn't it great when something that looks so good also feels so good, inside and out.

We had a great time at our recent Mimosa Saturday at the Larkspur store.  Pictured is Anne, one of our very fun customers, enjoying a mimosa and admiring her new massimo striped babette. This was her first stop before moving on to the mezzanote charmeuse and lupo fur that would accompany the babette home in her luxe birthday bag. Happy Birthday Anne.

A Sense of Place

Marin County draws people because of the sheer natural beauty found here. Mt. Tamalpais, the majestic redwoods, the awe-inspiring beaches…all just minutes from San Francisco and the East Bay.

Erica Tanov draws people because of the beauty that is found in all of her stores: the petal silks, the highwire and rothko tapestry bergens, the organic cable-knit sweaters... Each ET location has its own unique personality and flair. What we love about the Larkspur store is that it has a sense of place.

Using local materials, and drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of the land, Erica Tanov, in collaboration with Bay Area architectural firm envelope A+D, and local artists and artisans, created a space that has an organic quality that is uniquely Marin, while retaining the beautiful and ineffable quality that is uniquely Erica Tanov.

 

A little info:

All of the wood was provided by Evan Shively of Arborica (Marshall): front bench and inset shelves are cypress, the table is a slab of walnut (pictured above), the dressing room benches are bay, the sign was made using the remains of the piece of bay from the dressing rooms (pictured above). Lucas Ford (Oakland) is the wood worker who made the walnut table, bay benches in the dressing rooms, and the bay sign. And Chris French (Oakland) is the metal smith who forged the blackened steel racks and installed into the floor.

The Little Slip that Could

Last night was a celebration of 20 years of the Lola slip, the piece that started it all. Erica Tanov collaborated with photographer, Katy Grannan and former SF ballet dancer, Muriel Maffre to create a beautiful limited edition book. Available in stores.
